Established in 1958, Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, is a private, not-for-profit institution that provides tertiary and secondary level health care services. The decision to upgrade the Hospital to a tertiary level teaching hospital was taken in order to respond to the health care needs of the people of East Africa. AKUHN is a premier provider of ambulatory care and quality inpatient services, including critical care. The University Hospital plans to strengthen existing partnerships with the Ministry of Health and other universities offering health education, with an aim to share experiences, strengthen public sector delivery systems and collaborate on teaching and research.

The Opportunities

WINTER 2017 - 8 Months

1. Health Management Intern - Nairobi, Kenya: Intern will be working in VP, Health Services to support the implementation and enhancement of various projects, including organizational development, and service planning initiatives. The intern will be introduced to change management in a healthcare setting.
2. Financial Analyst - Nairobi, Kenya: Help with determining bundle payment for various projects based on activity-based accounting principles and perform capitation analysis in emerging markets/economies, develop strategic cost reduction solutions
3. Finance Planning Offer - Nairobi, Kenya: The Aga Khan University operates through an endowment funding strategy. As the University expands and grows, more strategies must be developed to accommodate the changes in costs for individual programmes and areas. The intern will be required to facilitate in the development of an endowment strategy to meet the changing needs of the university.
4. Events Office Coordinator - Nairobi, Kenya: Intern will be working under the Events and External Programmes portfolio at the Office of the President. The intern will help create a presence for the Office of Events and Ceremonies (OOEC) in Nairobi for the East African campuses. In addition, the intern will manage projects assigned including research, website/portal development, guest list development, event coordination, external stakeholder engagement support during Convocation etc. One of the major objectives of this position will be to provide consulting services to regional event organizers at our campuses.
5. Research Communication Analyst - Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: Research projects in education in rural East Africa.
6. Education Research Assistant - Dubai, UAE: Development of Departmental Disease Registries: Hypertension, heart failure, acute coronary syndrome, acute pulmonary embolism, Atrial fibrillation, HIV and TB at different stages of development. Participate in on-going clinical trials and surveys in the department.
7. Education Research Assistant - Nairobi, Kenya: The Educational Research Assistant will be supporting the Assistant Director and her team to ensure activities planned are evidence based and to promote educational scholarship amongst our faculty.

SUMMER 2017 - 8 Months

1. HR Systems Strenthening Support - Nairobi, Kenya: AKES,K is undergoing change to strengthen its Organisational Development (OD) foundation. Key to this change process is a strong HR function, specifically policy and systems, as well as their institutionilisation. The intern will support the AKES,K HR Unit to define a road map for HR system strengthening and its implementation.
2. 6. Project Management Intern - Nairobi, Kenya: AKU Kampala is a hospital under construction in Uganda. It is an urban, tertiary, referral and teaching hospital whose planned construction will last five years, starting from 2016.
7. Strategic Planning Project Intern - Nairobi, Kenya: The intern will assist the University Librarian and a team of AKU librarians in the development and writing of a strategic plan for AKU libraries.
8. Research Communication Assistant - Dar es Salaam, Tanzania:
Research projects in education in rural East Africa.
9. Education Research Assistant - Dubai, UAE: Intern will provide monitoring, evaluation and research support for ECD and Primary Programmes across the AKES network. Specific projects will include ECD and Primary Programme Impact Studies, Implementation of Developmental Health and Education Screening Initiatives, and Foundational ECD entry level course development.
10. Education Research Assistant - Nairobi, Kenya: The Educational Research Assistant will be supporting the Assistant Director and her team to ensure activities planned are evidence based and to promote educational scholarship amongst our faculty.
11. SUMMER 2017 - 3 Months

AKU Hospital is seeking 2 student interns. One intern should possess a business and financial background and the other would possess business operations management expertise.
The two positions are:
1. Financial Analyst: Help with determining bundle payment for various projects based on activity-based accounting principles and perform capitation analysis in emerging markets/economies
2. Operations Management Intern: mapping of the existing processes and proposing re-engineering solutions.

Timing

Winter internships will begin in February and Summer (3 month and 8 month) internships will begin in early summer.
