Western Serves 2015

September 19, 2015: Western Heads East kick-started the 2015/2016 academic year at Western University by participating in the Western Serves Day of Service on September 19. Western Serves is one of Western’s Community Engaged Learning programs which enables students, staff and faculty to go out into the community and support the work that Western’s partner organizations do. This campus-wide event allows volunteers to spend an afternoon with the non-profit and continue on their support efforts, if the volunteers wish to, after the event has finished.

During Western Serves, WHE Fundraising and Education Committee welcomed fourteen volunteers with a short presentation about its cause, and then engaged the volunteers in a fun fundraising competition. It involved making posters in teams and selling traditional African bracelets around campus, while spreading awareness of the organization. The grand prize was WHE “YO MAMA” T-shirts, which served as an excellent driving force for volunteers to put their best efforts into raising funds.

After a day of fierce competition, the volunteers altogether raise a remarkable sum of around $200, almost triple the amount raised last year. Needless to say the event was a success, with volunteers appreciating WHE’s efforts towards AIDs in Africa, and showing interest in lending further support to the organization.
