Volunteer Social 2015

On Thursday October 1, Western Heads East Fundraising and Education Committee held our very first volunteer social. Students interested in becoming more involved with WHE were welcome to come and find out more about volunteering opportunities with Western Heads East, what we have planned for the 2015-16 year, and the internships available through the program. Volunteer social photoPresentations were made by Nafisa Haque and Nabeela Haque from the WHE team. Rhiannon Yanush, a 2015 summer intern for the Kivulini Women’s Rights Organization in Mwanza, Tanzania, shared her experiences working with the organization on an evaluation of an anti-violence education program called SASA. Rhiannon learned a great deal as she accompanied staff to various communities where the program was implemented to learn about the impact from participants. Though the language barrier presented a challenge on the community visits, she was able to apply her skilsl and contribute to summarizing results and developing a final report. Western students interested in an internship in the coming year are encouraged to contact the Western Heads East program. While munching over pizza, we had a great time getting to know everyone who came out!
