Feb 28 - student mobility update
Western continues to monitor the ongoing COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) situation and takes direction from federal, provincial and local health authorities.
On February 26, the Public Health Agency of Canada updated the list of countries affected by COVID-19.
After careful consideration of this new information, and in light of the evolving nature of this situation, Western University is cancelling all university-sanctioned* student travel from March 1, 2020 to September 1, 2020 for the following locations:
- Hong Kong
- South Korea
(Note: previous Government of Canada travel advisories and additional security considerations had already restricted travel to China, Hong Kong and Iran).
Western International is reaching out to students who may already be in the regions above to provide up-to-date information and support required on a case-by-case basis. Western is also working closely with our institutional partners to monitor the situation and provide support.
The Western International team is also working closely with Western faculty and staff who have been involved in coordinating planned student travel for this period.
We continue to monitor this evolving situation closely and may update the list of suspended countries as required.
Given the circumstances, we ask Deans and other academic leaders for their flexibility and assistance with respect to course credit transfer considerations, and other academic accommodations that may be required for students who are affected by this cancellation.
Advice for Travellers
Western International strongly encourages faculty and staff to avoid non-essential travel to the affected regions. Any students who do not comply with the cancellation and are persistent in travelling to affected regions must complete a Special Authorization to Travel Form well in advance.
If faculty and staff do plan to travel to affected regions please complete the Safety Abroad Steps for Faculty and Staff, and advise your Dean and colleagues of your travel itinerary and plan. We also recommend the use of International ISOS. Before travelling, individuals can access detailed in-country reports and download the assistance app. They can also access worldwide emergency assistance 24/7.
