  • In 2016-17, 8 Western students travelled on exchange to Germany and 20 German students came to Western.
  • In 2016-17, more than 40 researchers engaged in research and exchanges with German institutions. 
  • Between 2012 and 2016, Western researchers co-authored and published 754 articles, abstracts, reviews, proceeding papers,  editorial materials, or book chapters with researchers at German institutions.
  • 25 Western faculty members have received an advanced degree from a German institution

Key Research Activities

  • Fraunhofer Project Centre for Composites Research
    • A joint venture between Western and the Fraunhofer Institute of Chemical Technology in Germany, the Fraunhofer Project Centre at Western is unique in Canada. Established in 2012, it is the leading site for advanced composite materials research and testing at a manufacturing scale for several industrial sectors in North America, including transportation, renewable energy, construction and others.  
  • LANXESS Butyl Rubber Research & Development Facility
    • A global leader in specialty chemicals, LANXESS opened its butyl rubber research and development facility at Western’s research park in 2011. The facility is dedicated to the development of butyl rubber - a versatile, high performance polymer that is biocompatible.
