When my son was in Grade 6 they were required to bring in a "special person" (non family member)to speak to their class. Bob Gough kindly came to the school to talk to the children about the Western Heads East program and the Yogurt Mamas. The class (and their teacher) were so enthused with the project that they started selling freezies at recess to raise the money to buy a cow. It was a great learning experience for the children and made my son very proud that he initiated something that everyone got on board with.

One of my favourite memories of Western Heads East is the beginning when there was a fervor of activity to do something that would make a change and contribute to the wellbeing of African communities. The collaboration of divisions, to the naming of our project. It was a rush, physically and mentally.

One of my favourite memories of my experience in Mwanza, Tanzania, was dancing at the annual Nane Nane Festival - a public holiday for recognizing the important contribution of farmers to the Tanzanian economy. It was a lot of fun and a great to engage with the community.

Western heads east fundraising and education committee, and working with Bob was one of the best memories of being at Western University. WHE was a home away from home!

My journey at WHE started out in a work-study position supporting interns, and gradually became a student volunteer and lead for the Western Heads East Fundraising & Education Committee. WHE provided me with a breadth of experience, learning about international development in a hands-on role. I learned a lot from the back scenes, and I still remember helping set up the radio campaign where we worked with a volunteer radio voice announcer. WHE was an inspiration for me to pursue a career in global health; working with communities to promote a grassroots movement for change. One of my favourite event was the Art in the Market, where my team and I worked to create a silent auction to raise funds for the organization. It was a great and grand time for all! Congratulations Western Heads East for your 20th anniversary!
