Why I chose Western
I chose Western because of its strong reputation and the sense of community on campus. I was especially drawn to the Media and Communications program because it offers both creative and analytical opportunities, allowing me to explore different areas within the field while gaining practical experience. This was crucial to me as I didn't entirely know what I wanted to do after high school.
My experience abroad
I spent a semester in Barbados, which had a huge impact on me. I am naturally a homebody, so going was initially out of my comfort zone, but it ended up being one of the best decisions I’ve made. It helped me become more independent, open-minded, and confident, and it gave me a new perspective on both my personal and academic life. Doing a semester in your fourth year is less common; however, I wouldn't have done it any other way. The experience also opened my eyes to how big the world is and all the different job opportunities that are out there. I think this was really beneficial and important for me to see before I graduate.
A favourite memory of my time at Western
One of my favourite memories was OWeek during first year. I think it's such a special time that you don’t necessarily realize in the moment. There is so much going on, and you're meeting lifelong friends. It was a special time and definitely one of my favourite memories.
An accomplishment I'm especially proud of
This is a kind of different take on an accomplishment. However, I am proud that I trusted my gut at the end of my first year and changed my program. I initially came to Western to study kinesiology. Coming out of high school, I didn't know what I wanted to do or what field I wanted to go into. I grew up with sports being my entire life, thus I thought I would like kinesiology. At Christmas (halfway through the semester), I thought about switching because I really didn't take to what I was learning, but I was told to just stick it out. Then by the end of the year, I knew it wasn't for me. I then had to be undeclared for the second year as I began switching to Media Communications. This was a scary time, but I’m proud I advocated for myself and have taken summer courses to ensure I am still graduating on time this April!
My plans for after graduation
After graduation, I hope to pursue a career in communications or marketing, ideally within a lifestyle, equine, or sports-related industry where I can combine my professional skills with my personal passions.
In five years, I hope to be working in a role where I feel both fulfilled and passionate about what I do, ideally in a creative communications or marketing position within an industry I love. I also hope to continue growing professionally while maintaining a lifestyle that allows me to stay active and involved in my interests.
A fun fact about me
I've competed nationally in three sports! Ski racing, wakeboarding, and equestrian show jumping!
My advice for new students
My advice is to step outside your comfort zone and take advantage of as many opportunities as possible. Whether it’s joining clubs, doing an internship, or studying abroad, those experiences can shape your path in ways you don’t expect.
