Impact of my global learning experience
My exchange experience was honestly one of the best decisions I've ever made. It completely changed the way I think about the world and how I approach new experiences. Living and studying in another country challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone every day. Academically, working in a new research environment pushed me to explore beyond my own expectations and exposed me to different approaches to science and learning. Personally, I gained a greater appreciation for different cultures, perspectives, and ways of life, and I returned home with a much broader outlook on the world.
Why I chose Western
I chose Western because of the incredible opportunities it offers students. From clubs and extracurricular activities to research, co-op, leadership positions, and study abroad opportunities, I felt there were endless ways to grow both academically and personally. I was also drawn to Western's outstanding faculty and the strong support system available to help students succeed throughout their university journey.
Highlights from my Western experience
One of the biggest highlights of my Western experience has been stepping outside of my comfort zone. Although moving abroad was definitely scary at first—especially since I had lived in the same place for most of my life—it ended up being everything I hoped for and more. It helped me become much more independent, adaptable, and confident in myself, and those are qualities I'll carry with me long after graduation.
A fun fact about me
A fun fact about me is that my social media username for most of my life was ballerm55! I was obsessed with basketball growing up, and despite plenty of teasing from my friends and family over the years, the name stuck for a long time.
My advice for students considering going abroad
If you're even thinking about studying abroad, I would absolutely encourage you to do it. It will change the way you see the world and help you appreciate life from a completely different perspective. You'll grow academically, personally, and professionally in ways you can't fully imagine beforehand. I'd also encourage students to take advantage of the support Western provides. There are so many resources available, including financial support, that make studying abroad much more accessible than many students realize.
I'm really excited to connect with students who are considering studying abroad. I'd love to share my experience, answer questions, and help in any way I can. Going on exchange was one of the most rewarding experiences of my university journey, and I hope I can encourage others to take that opportunity as well.
