Global Experience in

Gold Coast, Australia

Impact of my global learning experience

My global learning experience took place at Griffith University in Gold Coast, Australia. During my exchange, I had the opportunity to connect and create friendships with people from all over the world, as well as fellow Western students. Studying in a new academic environment exposed me to different teaching styles, a range of perspectives, and diverse experiences that I wouldn’t have encountered otherwise. I gained just as much from the people around me as I did from my courses.

Beyond the classroom, I was able to explore new cities, immerse myself in a different lifestyle, and build a home for myself while being so far away from my own. This experience also had a lasting impact on me personally. Living in a completely new environment encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone, discover new parts of myself, and become more confident. I found that I was able to express myself so freely, and that sense of authenticity was empowering. My exchange helped me grow into a more independent, open-minded, and adventurous version of myself, which I am forever grateful for.

Why I chose Western

I chose to come to Western because of its strong sense of community and the vibrant, inclusive student experience that I had heard so much about. Coming from a family of Western alumni, I grew up hearing about the meaningful experiences they had here, and how opportunities throughout their education shaped their personal and professional journeys. I was also drawn to Western’s strong reputation, extensive alumni network, and opportunities to broaden my global perspective through international experiences. I knew Western would be a place where I could grow.

Other highlights from my Western experience

Throughout my Western experience, I have found so many opportunities to get involved on campus, and these have become some of my most meaningful memories. Being part of the Western Women’s Flag Football Club gave me a sense of belonging and introduced me to a family-like community. I love being surrounded by people who are accepting, supportive, and challenge each other to work hard.

Through the Exercise is Medicine Club, I have also been able to contribute to meaningful experiences for others through leading social wellness events.

One of the things I value most about Western is that there are opportunities and communities for everyone to feel supported while being themselves.

My advice for students considering going abroad

If you are considering going on exchange (and even if you are not yet sure), my advice is to do it! It is a life-changing experience that will challenge you, inspire you, and help you grow in ways you never expected. You will learn so much about yourself, the new place you are living in, and the diverse perspectives that exist around the world.

Exchange allows you to meet the most accepting, adventurous, and incredible people from different countries, while also building connections with Western students you may not have otherwise met. You will become more adaptable, open-minded, and appreciative of the world beyond your familiar surroundings. Step outside your comfort zone and embrace the opportunity to its fullest.
