Health Care & Wellness

As an international student, you are covered by two health insurance plans designed to support your medical, dental, and overall wellness needs while studying in Canada.

  • All international students are automatically enrolled in the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) for primary medical coverage.
  • Full-time students are also enrolled in an extended Health and Dental Plan based on their student status ( undergraduate or graduate), providing additional coverage for services such as prescriptions, dental care, and vision care.

Note: International students are required to be enrolled in both health plans, unless they have an approved equivalent plan. Accompanying dependants (spouse/children) must be added to each plan separately.

Below, you’ll find an overview of each plan and what it covers to help you better understand your health insurance options.

University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP)

Your primary health insurance. Provides international students similar coverage to the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) for Canadians. Covers hospital visits, x-ray, doctor appointments, surgery, pregnancy, and more.

Emergency Services

In case of emergency, please dial 9-1-1 (police, fire and/or ambulance).

There are 2 main hospitals in London with 3 Emergency Departments and 1 Urgent Care Centre:

Telehealth Ontario - 1-866-797-0000

This free and confidential telephone service connects you over the phone with a Registered Nurse for health advice and consultations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Anyone living in Ontario may use this service.

When you call Telehealth Ontario, the nurse will ask you to describe your symptoms and help you to decide whether you should care for yourself at home, go to a walk-in clinic or a hospital emergency room. You do not have to give a UHIP number when you call or fill out any forms.

Telehealth Ontario provides service in English and French, with translation support for 110 other languages.

Walk-in Clinics

These are public or private health care establishments that offer general medical services to the community. An appointment is not usually necessary as you can simply “walk-in” to see a doctor for your health concern. The doctor who is available at the time will see you in the order of your arrival to the clinic. Be aware that depending on the time of day, you may wait 1-2 hours to see a doctor as many people use these clinics because of their convenience. You will be required to show your UHIP card and fill out a UHIP claim form during each visit.
