Involvement with Western International

Western International Volunteer

Why I chose to come to Western

I visited Western’s campus with my cousin who was a student here, and I instantly fell in love. The campus was beautiful, the city offered a nice balance—enough to do but not too distracting—so I could focus on my studies.

How I would describe my overall Western experience

I would describe my Western experience as unpredictable, spontaneous, and rewarding. I started during peak COVID, which made everything feel uncertain at first. But every day brought something new—whether it was a surprise event in the UCC or a spontaneous adventure with friends. Through it all, I grew a lot, made lasting memories, and truly feel like I’ve checked so many things off my Western bucket list.

A favourite memory of my time at Western

Some of my favourite memories are just spending time with friends—studying together, going out for dinner, or hanging out. Also, volunteering at the Children's Health Foundation as a mascot handler and celebrating Lunar New Year with the Vietnamese Student Association were unforgettable.

An accomplishment I’m especially proud of

I’m really proud of all the volunteering I did through Western International. I was able to help international students feel more at home and build a strong sense of community through fun events.

A fun fact about me

I’m double jointed in my thumbs—I can do a neat little trick with them!

My plans for after graduation

In the next five years, I hope to be working a lab focusing on microorganisms. I took a microbiology course in my second year, and it was a challenging course, but I found it to be incredibly interesting!

My advice to new students

My advice to incoming students: come in with no expectations and be open to surprises. University has a way of surprising you—in a good way! Also, check out what’s happening at the UCC—there’s always something fun going on.
