Why I chose Western
It was a combination of program, campus, and student life. I’m really affected by my environment, and Western’s beautiful campus immediately stood out to me. The student life is vibrant and welcoming—it felt like a place I could call home.
Highlights of my Western Experience
Joining the Western Tennis Club was a big one. I started in second year and became club president in my final year. It gave me a strong sense of community and became a weekly escape from academic stress. The friends I made and the support I received—especially from Western International during my exchange—really shaped my experience.
My Experience Abroad
I spent my final semester at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. I’d always been curious about it because of its history and traditions, and when I saw it listed on Western’s study abroad options, I applied right away. I was the only Western student there at the time, which made it even more of a leap—but one I’m so glad I took. Studying abroad was one of the most eye-opening parts of my university journey. I’ve always loved Western—there’s a strong sense of community and support—but being away helped me see things differently. At large universities, it’s easy to fall into a bit of a bubble. You stick to your program or social circle, and sometimes there’s an unspoken hierarchy around what you’re studying or planning to do. Being at St Andrews broke that mindset for me. Students there were diving into niche subjects—marine biology, art history—not for status, but out of pure passion. It reminded me how important it is to step outside our routines, explore new perspectives, and embrace curiosity. That shift was really refreshing.
What stood out most about my experience at St Andrews
Definitely the traditions—from the May Dip (a 5 am plunge into the ocean) to the academic family system where students adopt each other as parents, siblings, and cousins. I also loved how events were such a big part of student life—everything from formal balls to fashion shows. But most of all, it was the people. I met lifelong friends from all over the world and truly felt part of a global community.
What advice would you give other students?
Step out of your comfort zone. Join clubs, meet new people, and don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s. Everyone’s on their own path. And if you get the chance to study abroad—go for it. Even if it’s scary at first, you’ll grow in ways you don’t expect and learn to trust yourself more.
What’s a fun fact about you?
I love horseback riding—even though I’m severely allergic to horses! When I was at St Andrews, I still signed up for lessons and broke out in hives every time, but honestly, it was worth it.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
Be present. It’s easy to get caught up in thinking about the next step, but the years go by fast. Looking back, I wish I’d paused more to enjoy the little moments. Don’t overthink everything—just do it.
