Involvement with Western International
International Student
Why I chose Western
Western stood out to me for several reasons. It has a strong academic reputation, excellent faculty, and great facilities and resources—especially for international students. The funding support has allowed me to focus on my studies without the financial pressure that often exists in Ghana, where students typically pay out-of-pocket for post-secondary education. I also appreciate the intercultural community here and the chance to learn from people around the world.
Highlights of my Western Experience so far
There have been many highlights, but one that stands out is the opportunity I had to moderate the “Own Your Future” Scholars to Leaders session in November 2023. It meant a lot to me because I had been a regular attendee of the program, and being invited to lead the session was a meaningful recognition. I’ve also been deeply involved in committees, events, and research initiatives, including winning Best Pitch at the WORLDiscoveries Graduate Student Innovation Scholars program for a project supporting farmers. These moments have helped shape my leadership and community engagement at Western.
An accomplishment I’m especially proud of
I’m proud of my involvement in many areas of university life. I’ve served as a TA, a Society of Graduate Students (SOGS) Councilor, and a member of several committees, including the SOGS Policy Committee and Racial Equity and Inclusivity Committee. I also worked on the Robert Macmillan Symposium in Education across multiple teams. Winning the Best Pitch Award and delivering the land acknowledgement at Western’s Black History Month celebration in 2023 are also very meaningful to me.
A fun fact about me
I’m a huge football (soccer) fan and a devoted Manchester United supporter. Watching matches—especially when my team is playing—is how I relax and relieve stress.
My advice for new students
Yes—my advice for other international students is to get involved and take advantage of all the resources Western offers. Use the Writing Support Centre, visit the library, join committees, and don’t be afraid to try something new. Even applying for something you’re unsure about can lead to great opportunities. Being confident and open to new experiences can truly transform your time here. Also, be a risk-taker and an optimist. As someone once said, “Failure is the opportunity to begin again, but this time more intelligently.” So go for it—you’re already doing something amazing by being here.
