Why I chose Western

I always dreamed of pursuing a master’s degree abroad. After becoming a mother, I thought that dream might no longer be possible. But later I realized many people pursue further education with families, so I started searching for options. I found Canada and Australia appealing, but Canada made more sense in terms of distance, weather, and opportunities. I chose Western because it’s one of the top civil engineering programs in Canada and had a more accessible admissions process compared to others. I wanted to do this right—not just for the work permit, but to truly learn and grow.

Highlight of my Western Experience so far

One of my first memories here was meeting other students at an International Student Orientation event—students from Brazil, China, and Bangladesh. It made me realize how international and welcoming the Western community is. It felt magical to be in such a diverse environment.

An accomplishment I’m especially proud of

I’m proud of managing multiple academic programs—completing both architecture and civil engineering degrees in Peru while also earning an associate degree in the U.S. I’ve always worked better under pressure and enjoy staying busy. Coming to Canada with my family, after leaving a good job in Peru, was also a huge and courageous decision I’m proud of.

A fun fact about me

I love crafts—especially working with paper. Back home, I even had a machine that cut paper for my projects. I also love to read, and I’m trying to reconnect with that passion now.

Final thoughts

Balancing life as a mother, student, and spouse is challenging, especially being far from family. But pursuing this dream is important to me. I’m open to the possibilities—whether that means staying in Canada after graduation or returning to Peru with new skills and experiences. I want people to know it’s possible to pursue your dreams, even with a family, and that it’s okay to take a leap of faith.
