Why I chose Western
Initially, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go to university at all because the transition from the Caribbean education system to Canada seemed overwhelming. I didn’t think I was smart enough or capable of handling the pressure. However, when Western came to Antigua to give a presentation, I fell in love with the programs and the university.
My first impressions of Canada and Western
I found it very welcoming. Western does a great job of making students feel at home, especially when they’re making such a big transition. That feeling of support has stayed with me throughout my time here.
Highlights of My Western Experience
My first year at Western was packed with activities. I was on the Residence Council, a member of the Multicultural Club, worked in the international department, participated in International Week, and was part of the HBK Cancer "Relay for Life" Club.
One of my biggest highlights was being part of the Multicultural Club. It was amazing to see the diversity at Western—so many countries are represented. I also loved International Week – with different performances, music, food, and people from all over the world.
My advice for new students
Definitely take advantage of the resources the school offers. The transition can be overwhelming, and without using these resources, it’s easy to feel lost.
For example, when I first started, I knew I wanted to study psychology, but I didn’t realize how many different branches there were. Talking to students, advisors, and older peers helped me narrow down my interests. Western also has the Peer Guide program, which was very beneficial for me. I met a lot of friends through the group events and support system.
My goals for the future
My plan is to get my master’s and eventually my doctorate. I know I want to work with people, specifically children. I’ve been considering becoming a teacher or a counselor for kids. I was initially interested in forensic psychology, but over the past two years, Family Studies has really drawn me in. To confirm my interest, I’m currently volunteering in schools, helping with tutoring. By the end of this semester, I hope to finalize my career direction.
A fun fact about me
I’m a really good baker! I used to bake a lot at home, but I didn’t like doing the dishes, so my mom wasn’t always thrilled about it. Now that I live on my own, I enjoy baking even more. I find it relaxing, especially when I combine it with music or movies.
