Involvement with Western International

Volunteer

What is something you'd like to highlight about yourself or a fun fact about you?

I love but also envy my cat. As an international traveller, he never has to deal with jet lag or language barriers like we international students do!

What's been a highlight of your Western Experience so far?

One of the highlights of my time at Western was winning the Top Award of the Western GIS Days Map Gallery, which led me to a valuable internship with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation, and Parks (MECP). Western has also given me the opportunity to explore engineering design and data analysis, which I hope to integrate to create sustainable cities and buildings.

Why did you choose Western?

I chose Western for its diversity and the opportunity to connect with people from various backgrounds. Through volunteering roles such as Western International volunteer, Pride Commissioner for Society of Graduate Students (SOGS), and joining the Communications Committee for Science Rendezvous at Western, I've not only enriched my academic journey but also gained new perspectives on experiencing and learning different ways of thinking, language structures, and social culture beyond my professional studies.

Is there anything you've found surprising about Canada/Western so far?

Western and Canada have impressed me with their strong commitment to inclusivity, especially for minority groups, people with disabilities, and Indigenous communities. It's common to hear people introduce their pronouns and describe their appearance for those with visual impairments before speaking at a meeting. Around campus and the city, many shops proudly display rainbow flags and “Safe Space” signs, creating a welcoming and respectful environment for everyone.

Do you have any advice for new students?

Make the most of your time outside the classroom by joining campus activities or volunteering! These experiences will enrich your life, help you build connections. Additionally, take advantage of the invaluable academic support, counseling services, and career guidance at Western.

Is there anything else you want to share?

As an international student, Western has provided me with the space and support to grow and pursue my dreams. I am eager to see where this incredible journey will take me next.
