Why I chose Western

I completed a Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology at Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT) in India in 2019. After spending three years working as a software engineer in India, I decided to upskill and pursue a master’s degree in Canada.

Highlights of my Western Experience

A big highlight for me has been volunteering at Western and having an impact, especially as a Peer Guide, where you have new students looking up to you and coming to you for advice. That requires skills too, so being selected to be a mentor is something I considered an achievement. Western is a great place with a lot happening all the time. I really liked attending Global Café events and meeting people from around the world. With so many opportunities to take part in, I barely spent any time in my room – I was always out at the university. It was like my real home. I went to my room mostly to sleep!

An accomplishment I’m proud of

I was given an award from the Faculty of Engineering recognizing my community engagement and academic accomplishments. I was really proud of that. Earlier in my career I received an award and did not go to the ceremony and regretted that, so this time I made sure to go.

What's next for me

Since graduating in December, I've been working as a technology consultant for a company in Hamilton. I want to take a few years to gain some hands-on work experience in Canada and utilize what I’ve learned from my master’s. I consider myself to be still young, and while you are young and starting your career, you can figure out things and try out different things.

My advice for new students

Don't stop yourself from exploring! Western has so many clubs to join, many activities to take part in and groups that you can volunteer for.

Fun fact about me

I love to explore things and I don’t wait for someone to accompany me to do it. Sometimes people are too busy to coordinate so I just make plans and go. I’m taking a solo trip to Alberta in July. I’m going to visit Jasper and Banff to explore there!
